The Dutch government will introduce a sorting and recycling system to recycle household plastic waste. This move is part of the government’s plan to double the plastic packaging recovery rate by 2012.
This week, the Dutch Minister of the Environment Jacqueline Cramer reached an agreement with local governments and plastic packaging professionals. The agreement requires that the packaging recovery rate increase from the current 22.5% to 42%. It is understood that 22.5% of the recycling rate is the rate required by EU law.
A survey report requested by the Dutch Minister of the Environment earlier this year showed that as many as 91% of the public supported the plastic bottle recycling system.
When the Dutch government took office this year, it promised to levy a £1.69 packaging tax. However, due to the introduction of new measures, packaging companies will be charged an additional £78 million in waste funds each year to support local government’s rising costs. Various stakeholders from government and business people will vote this fall to determine if the agreement can be passed.
It is also understood that in the UK, the recycling rate of plastic packaging waste in 2006 was 21.9%.
