The concept of background removal and its application in Photoshop

(This article is an original article from Bisheng. It is forbidden to reprint, and reprinting must be corrected)

According to chromatic theory, the three colors of yellow, magenta, and cyan can be overprinted to the full color of the original, including two series of color and gray (also called achromatic). Due to the inherent defects of the three primary colors of ink, it is not easy to reproduce neutral gray, and a black ink replaces the corresponding neutral gray produced by the corresponding yellow, magenta, and cyan overprinting. In actual printing, a black plate is often added to replace the gray part of the composite color with black ink, which is called background color removal. If the three-color inks with gray components in the composite three-color are removed and replaced with black inks, the full background color is removed, also called achromatic structure. This process saves ink. The dark tone is mainly composed of dark and dark colors, and the background color can be removed.
In addition, when using PHOTOSHOP software for image conversion, if you use the default settings of the software, you will find that the ink color of the printed image is not saturated and the color is not vivid. This is because in the default settings of the software, the achromatic structure is used for the image to be converted, so that the total amount of ink in the deepest part is about 280%. Ink used in China, the saturation of black ink is not enough, and it is gray, which makes the printed matter printed with such parameters insufficient in the dark tone part. The total ink limit is set at 400%, which will cause the ink to not dry easily during the printing process. Therefore, when setting, it is necessary to set the total ink limit to 320-360%, and the black ink limit to 80-85% (this setting is suitable for coated paper offset printing, not for newspaper printing), as shown in the following figure.

figure 1

In the ink options, the ink color column lists some types of ink and paper for selection, different choices will affect the color conversion. The use of European standard inks to print on coated paper, the use of US inks to print on coated paper, and the use of Japanese inks to print on coated paper, the percentages of the converted dots are different. Among them, the use of US ink printing has a higher color saturation. Followed. The dot is increased by one item, which can be adjusted according to the machine condition of the printing plant. The general value should be between 15-20%. In the case where it is possible to determine a different increase value for each color version, the curve can be used for adjustment, see the figure below.

figure 2

Here you can enter different values according to different color versions and dot percentages.

In Figure 1, the black under the color separation options produces a column that primarily controls where the version appears. In printing, the general version selection appears in the mid-bright tone, that is, between 30-40%, so choose "medium".

It should be mentioned here that GCR and UCR in the color separation type. GCR (Gray Color Replacement) means gray replacement,
UCR (Under Color Removal) is to remove the background color. The use of these two versions will be different. The GCR version has more levels of continuous tone, but the version appears earlier, so using GCR requires subtracting some highlights from the image when adjusting the image; choose UCR, which has fewer levels but appears in a better position. On the whole, the layers of images printed by GCR are richer.
