Recently, scientists from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom used 3D modeling and 3D printing technology to create the first interactive 3D model called the human joint. The 3D scanning interactive model based on more than 200 individual bone specimens shows the common history of joints and bones, and shows how they will change and evolve in the future.
According to the 3D Tiger, the project has 3D scanned a total of 224 bone samples from the Devonian to the present (over 350 million years), including amphibians and reptiles such as dinosaurs, rew, tupaiae, lemurs, and spirits Long animals. Through CT scanning, Oxford researchers can study the comparison between ancient samples and modern samples, effectively creating "3D morphology". The study was led by Dr. Paul Monk from the Nuffield Department of Orthopedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences. He explained the importance of the project in the following way: "Throughout our entire career, we have been adjusting the shape of our joints, which has led to a series of new challenges that orthopedists will face. Recently, more and more Frequently encountered common problems, such as anterior knee pain and shoulder pain, lead us to need to understand the initial shape and function of the joint.
From the CT scan data of various shoulder, hip and knee samples, the research team is able to study and hypothesize the shape of bones in the future and how human bones will continue to evolve. Excitingly, the team can use 3D printed models to show what the bones will look like in the future. In addition to a glimpse into the future, the 3D model also makes it possible to study and identify potential causes of modern joint alternatives, and will help scientists predict future problems that may begin to arise based on lifestyle and genetic changes.
Ultimately, studying 3D models will help inform orthopedic surgery plans in the future, because current treatments and joint implants may not be suitable for evolving human bones. As Dr. Monk explained, this reality means that even common orthopedic surgery must be adapted.
"The current trends indicate that the modern shape of the joint replacement will not work in the future, which means we will need to reconsider our approach to many common surgeries," Dr. Monk commented. "We also want to see what we will look like in the future and answer questions such as 'Are we getting taller, faster or weaker', and 'May we be evolving to require hip replacement earlier?'
