EU assesses the safety of dimethyl carbonate for food contact materials

According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), on July 18, the EU Food Safety Agency's panel of experts on food contact materials, enzymes, flavoring agents and processing aids issued comments on the safety of dimethyl carbonate for food contact materials. Dimethyl carbonate was used as a monomer to produce polycarbonate prepolymer with 1,6-hexanediol, followed by formation of a thermoplastic polyurethane containing 29% polycarbonate prepolymer with other chemicals.
     The EU expert group has assessed that manufacturers need to evaluate different migration rates under different conditions. Under these conditions, dimethyl carbonate and total polycarbonate oligomers below 1000 Da are safe if each ingredient is in food. The content does not exceed 0.05mg/kg.
