2. Configure the network protocol

In order to make the sharing of the printer smooth, we must install the "File and Printer Sharing Protocol" on both the host and the client.

Right click on "My Network Places" on the desktop, select the "Properties" command, go to the "Network Connections" folder, right click on the "Local Area Connection" icon, select the "Properties" command, if on the "General" tab "File and printer sharing for Microsoft network" is not found in the "This connection uses the following items" list, you need to click the "Install" button, select "Service" in the pop-up dialog box, and then click "Add" in the "Select" Select "File and Printer Sharing" in the Network Service window, and finally click the "OK" button to complete.

3. Client installation and configuration

Now that we have all the work on the host, we have to configure the client that needs to share the printer. We assume that the client is also a Windows XP operating system. A print driver must be installed on every computer on the network that wants to use a shared printer.

Step 1: Click “Start → Settings → Printers and Faxes” to launch the “Add Printer Wizard” and select the “Network Printer” option.

Step 2: Several ways to add a network printer are available on the Specify Printer page. If you don't know the specific path of the network printer, you can select the "Browse Printer" option to find the printer shared in the same working group on the LAN, the computer with the printer installed, and then select the printer and click the "OK" button; if you already know For the printer's network path, you can enter the network path of the shared printer using the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) format for accessing network resources, such as "\\james\compaqIJ" (james is the host's username), and finally click Next. ".

Step 3: At this point, the system will ask you to enter the printer name again. After the input, click the “Next” button, then press the “Finish” button. If the host has set the shared password, you will be asked to enter the password. Finally, we can see that the icon for the shared printer has appeared in the "Printers and Faxes" folder of the client. Here, our network printer has been installed.

4. Make the printer safer

If only this is the case, illegal users on the local area network may also use the shared printer, causing the "cost rise" in printing costs. In order to prevent illegal users from sharing the printer at will, it is necessary to limit the use of the printer by setting the account usage rights. By setting the security properties of the printer installed on the host, you can specify that only a valid account can use the shared printer.

Step 1: In the "Printers and Faxes" folder of the host, right-click the shared printer icon in it, select the "Properties" option from the right-click menu, and in the shared printer properties setting box that opens, switch " Security tab.

Step 2: In the option setting page that opens later, select “everyone” in the “Name” list, and select “Reject” in the corresponding “Permissions” list, so that no user can Access to the shared printer.

Step 3: Then click the “Add” button to import the legal account that can use the shared printer into the “Name” list, then select the imported legal account and select the corresponding print permission as “Allow”. .

Repeat the third step to import all other legal accounts that need to use the shared printer, and then set their print permissions to "Allow", and then click the "OK" button.

Tip: If you can't find the "Security" tab, you can cancel "Use Simple File Sharing" by selecting "Tools → Folder Options → View" on the folder menu bar.
