Voxel8 Showcases and Free 3D Printed Electronics

3D printing technology development speed is accelerating recently, the well-known 3D printer manufacturer Voxel8 company showcase and publicly Get a FREE 3D printer to print directly from the company out of the electronic product samples. Each sample contains an embedded resistor and an LED lamp printed with standard silver ink from Voxel8. The founder of Voxel8 is the technical authority in the global 3D printing field, Harvard professor Jennifer A. Lewis.

3D printed sample parts

As a pioneer in the field of 3D printed electronics, Voxel8's development kit 3D electronic printers have been shipping a few months ago, and the receiving customers include Google's ATAP (Advanced Technology and Planning) division. It is reported that in 2015, when Voxel8 first released its development kit 3D printer, the whole market was very excited. Despite this, the company is still able to find ways to attract potential customers, for which they have produced 3D printed electronic parts samples for free to increase the supply needs of customers.

It is understood that this sample is actually a full 3D printed LED lamp, which consists of a single loop circuit, embedded surface mount LED and series resistors. The entire part, including the casing and electronics, can be printed in 3D in just a few minutes. And its circuitry is printed with Voxel8 standard silver ink, which is resistant to wear and can withstand multiple connection cycles without losing its conductivity.

Voxel8's silver ink 3D printed material has a volume resistivity of less than 5.0 x 10-7 Ω-m. Its conductive properties are 20,000 times that of conductive thermoplastic wires and 5000 times that of carbon-based inks, making it ideal for electronic components with large 3D printing currents. In addition, the ink is self-supporting and dries very quickly at room temperature, thus producing highly conductive electrode traces and connections without the need for thermal annealing. It is reported that this 3D printing ink is specially designed for pneumatic deposition through a 250 micron nozzle.

In fact, the Voxel8 Developer Suite 3D printer has been used for much more complex projects than this before. For example, before the 3D printer was put on the market, Voxel8 had a special project with the robotic gripper RightHand. Using Voxel8, the company was able to create a test system for its robotic finger and connect its fingers to the micro-control board. If the test is successful, an embedded LED will illuminate.

In addition, in order to demonstrate how to embed the electronics into the 3D printed housing to form a complete, functioning device, Voxel8 staff also used the 3D printer to create an "embedded watch." The watch has only two 3D printed parts, but includes a microcontroller, buttons, LEDs, magnets and pogo pins, all of which are inserted into the watch during the printing process. This watch flashes time each time the button is pressed.

Jennifer A. Lewis, founder of Voxel8, is a professor of bioengineering Hansj?rg Wyss at Harvard University. The core technology of Voxel8 is the result of more than a decade of research by Lewis and her team at Harvard. In 2014, her research results were also rated as one of the top ten “breakthrough technologies” by MIT Technology Review.
