MAP will try new tags

Recently, a U.S. company that manufactures food sensors plans to produce two types of outer packaging labels that detect broken meat. One of the two labels is specifically designed for Modified Air Package (MAP); the other is called freshQ and is used on standard meat packages.

The MAP tag is used to detect whether the meat and poultry in the package are damaged, and to detect the bacteria content in the package. When the deterioration of meat is detected, this label changes color. The company will launch this product in the second half of 2006.

The two labels were developed by Food Quality Sensor International (FQSI) and are currently undergoing laboratory testing.

Marc Bonné, Chairman and CEO of FQSI, believes that the market outlook for MAP labels is very optimistic based on consumers' concerns that the quality of MAP is reliable.

Since the MAP tag can automatically detect the quality of meat and can display the test results to consumers, it helps the consumer to eliminate the concern about the safety and reliability of meat quality.

Bonné hopes that when these two kinds of labels are put on the market, everyone will try it out so that the company can test the quality of both labels.

The company will launch a freshQ tag a week later, and the freshQ tag will be the first of its kind. For the first time, the company promoted the label only in 200 stores in the United States.

What is Modified Air Package (MAP)?

Modified air packaging is a way of packaging foods that are mixed with one or more gases. It replaces the air in the previous package with a specific gas, which reduces the rate of deterioration of the food in the package.
