Formlabs talks about the future development of 3D printing prostheses and 3D printing

For many years, 3D printing technology was mainly used for rapid prototyping. For the miniature model of the final solution, this is great. For practical implementation and long-term use, there are not so many cases.

In 2016, these conditions began to change. In the past 12 months, 3D printing has gradually been applied to many new fields, especially the medical field. In the next 12 months, David Lakatos of Formlabs told us that we can expect more of this innovation. Below, please follow the editor to learn more about the next steps of the Formlabs and 3D printing industry.

Last year, the Boston-based startup focused not only on more advanced 3D printers, but also on more advanced materials and software. After all, only with these additional innovations can the 3D printed objects be used further. Lakatos pointed out that Formlabs has launched a total of 10 new 3D printing materials, including flexible materials and materials that can withstand high temperatures up to 290 degrees Celsius. These new materials bring the ability to create completely new items, especially in the manufacture of artificial limbs.

Entering Lyman Connor, a General Electric engineer met with a young boy during a hospital visit a few years ago and was inspired to make 3D printed prostheses. Lakatos explained, “The problem with many prosthetics today is that they can neither be customized nor withstand weight. But with 3D printing, all this has changed. In fact, Connor uses a Formlabs printer to produce a new type of prosthetic hand. Not only can the prosthetic hand be specifically designed to meet the specific needs of the wearer, but it is also much cheaper than any option in the past. In December, Connor fitted his first patient with a prosthesis printed by Formlabs. "

"What we see here is the beginning of something new," Lakatos told us. "3D printing has opened new doors in digital manufacturing. In fact, one person ’s actions may soon produce the same output as a small factory. As the technology of companies such as 3D printing gradually reduces such production barriers, So important equipment like prostheses may become easier to implement. Now that one hand is already capable of 3D printing, the next step looks like elbows, then shoulder blades and shoulders, "Lakatos said.

So, what is the next step for Formlabs? "This is our job, let it go further," Lakatos said. "We want an application where you can 3D print something and use it for six months, a year, or even longer."
