5D storage technology is born to save data for 13.8 billion years

Researchers at the University of Southampton Research Center (ORC) recently reported that they have successfully developed 5D disks and can store them for hundreds of millions of years. Using nanotechnology to etch information onto glass, it has good stability and can withstand a thousand degrees of high temperature, and due to the physical properties of glass, data can be guaranteed not to be decomposed for 13.8 billion years.

5D (dimensional) in a 5D disk refers to the five dimensions of data storage. Each file storage unit consists of three layers of nanoscale gratings. The incident angle and direction of the grating, as well as the corresponding three-axis (X, Y, Z) coordinates constitute the data properties of the five dimensions. Light passing through the glass creates a refraction, and the data can be read through a polarizer and microscope. Traditional disks have only 0 or 1 dimensions.

The study started as early as 2013, when they could only store 300kb of information. On a coin-sized piece of glass, they stored the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Newton's Collection, and the Magna Carta. After three years of development, they finally improved the technology. Compared to ordinary Blu-ray discs, today's 5D disks can store up to 3,000 times the capacity.

Professor Peter of ORC said in the statement, "This technology will have a great impression on the long-term preservation of information. Its physical stability is more suitable for space than traditional disks. Perhaps such a medium will be human civilization after hundreds of millions of years. Proof of existence."
